Rock Star Teacher Nurtures Future Rock Star Students

Good Day Beautiful People,

I could not pass up the opportunity to share such a positive letter.  A great friend of mine and the most wonderfully patient teacher, Miss Amy, had some amazing things to say about her graduating student.

Amy works at the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning in Colorado.  I've visited and it is indeed a magical place!  Camping trips to kick off the year, skiing, hiking, teaching kids character & responsibility for themselves, and many more valuable approaches to teaching I have not come across before.  One key aspect I enjoyed are the character presentations each student is tasked to give at the end of every 2 to 3 years where they get up and present in front of a panel of community members and teachers.  The prompt is simple: how have you grown in the past couple years as a person, and what they want to develop into over the next couple years.  Some kids present how they've become a green belt in Taekwondo, others talk about how they are getting better at drawing.  Teachers who have worked closely with the students, are also asked to write a character letter like the one you are about to read, which will be given to that student's future teacher and anyone else who works closely with the student.

I liked this a lot & hope you will too - thanks Amy for allowing me to share **)

Dear Reader,

It is an absolute pleasure of mine to write a character letter on behalf of Aidan E.  I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with Aidan for the past two years at RMSEL, and cheer him on as he continues to make incredible leaps of growth academically. Not only have I had the chance to celebrate with him as he blooms as a rock star reader, but I also have had the opportunity to encourage his big dreams as a famous inventor. Aidan is already on the path to achieving his dreams...just ask to check out his incredibly detailed, thoughtful, and talented blue prints.

Aidan amazes me every day. His genuine compassion towards others, and his curiosity and enthusiasm for sharing facts about anything and everything in the world is contagious in the classroom. Aidan’s ability to capture new information, and teach others about these incredible facts that he has learned is truly amazing. I learn something new from Aidan on a daily basis. Whether he is teaching me about facts from the Titanic, the latest and greatest of various types of trains around the world, double decker buses, planes and other aircraft carriers, or about his brand new and first EVER electrical invention, I am always truly impressed. Aidan always shares with me his excitement about his new inventions that he will be making for me when he grows up. Between the specially made lightning proof RMSEL helicopters, a safe to hold all of my valuable trophies, and the very soon to be famous “Millenia” vacation cruise ship that is 8 Titanic’s long with live bands, plus lots, lots more. . .we sure have a lot to look forward to in years ahead!

Aidan’s ability to make impressive amounts of growth as a reader in a short time period is remarkable.  I have been so thrilled, as he has become more and more interested and excited about bringing in new books to read and share at school. Aidan also has become a master at identifying whether a syllable is either “open” or “closed” in multi-syllable words.  Just ask him for an example of a word, and he will tell you! Aidan also is the first to cheer on and warmly encourage other students in class that are also working on reaching their reading goals.

Aidan is brilliant. He is my personal desk organizer, my lunch buddy, my ukulele cheerleader, and my day maker. I look forward to working with Aidan every day, as he brings a huge smile to everyone’s face that he comes across. Be sure to get his autograph now, and watch out for the “Millennia,” “Trilenia,” and the “Sullenia,” boats coming out soon. I guarantee he will be a famous inventor, and that you will be hearing about these incredible inventions. Aidan E. is a total rock star!

Sincerely…Aidan’s #1 fan,

All I can think is how amazing is it going to be when Aidan is 20, 35, even 50, and he has this to look back on. . .well done Amy.  You're definitely making a big impact on people's lives - awesome job!

I'll leave you with a quote from Mister Rogers:

"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each one of us has something that no one else has - or ever will have - something inside that is unique to all time.  It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing it's expression."

Be Happy **)
